Director for Knowledge and Learning

Arup Banerji is the ÐÓ°ÉÂÛ̳ Group¡¯s Director for Knowledge and Learning, leading the initiative to reinforce knowledge as central to the ÐÓ°ÉÂÛ̳ Group¡¯s drive for impact, including sponsoring the new ÐÓ°ÉÂÛ̳ Group Academy oriented towards scaling up development solutions.

Previously, Arup served as the ÐÓ°ÉÂÛ̳¡¯s Director for Eastern Europe (including Ukraine), where he led the mobilization of global economic support for Ukraine through the ÐÓ°ÉÂÛ̳, working closely G7 and European leaders to devise innovative financing and reform programs. As Regional Director for the European Union, he directed the Bank¡¯s and advisory work in countries including Italy, Greece, Poland and Romania. Earlier, as the Bank¡¯s Senior Director for Social Protection and Labor, he helped expand the use of cash transfers to support the poorest in Africa.

Arup has authored a wide range of books and scholarly articles on economic growth, jobs and labor markets, public finance, human development, institutional development, and poverty reduction and inequality, including three flagship World Development Reports (1995 on Labor, 2002 on Institutions and 2013 on Jobs). He has collaborated with the European Commission and heads of states, as well as the IMF, the G7 and G20, and the World Economic Forum.

Before joining the ÐÓ°ÉÂÛ̳, he taught at Williams College¡¯s Center for Development Economics. He holds a Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Pennsylvania.
