Last month, the GWP hosted its annual conference in Panama. The annual conference is a catalytic event each year, with new ideas and knowledge shared across the program. As the platform continues to evolve, now with GEF-6, 7 and 8 projects, valuable lessons are being shared and carried forward. GEF-7 projects are building on the experiences of GEF-6 projects that are complete or nearing completion, while new GEF-8 projects are able to integrate this knowledge from the outset.
GWP Annual Conference 2024
The Global Wildlife Program hosted its annual conference in Panama City, Panama from January 20-24, 2025. With over 100 participants, including government focal points from 30 of the GWP¡¯s 38 participating countries, the conference highlighted best practices and facilitated knowledge exchange among project teams, government representatives, and partners. Attendees also collaborated on the Program¡¯s first initiative to co-design future knowledge activities.
South Africa¡¯s Wildlife Economy Generates Jobs for Rural Communities
South Africa¡¯s rural provinces are benefiting from programs to boost the rural economy and drive job creation by investing in one of the country¡¯s most valuable assets¡ªits nature. In doing so, the government is helping to preserve ecosystems and safeguard food security. It¡¯s not just good for the environment though¡ªit is essential for the economy. Since 2022, one ÐÓ°ÉÂÛ̳-pioneered innovation has been working to bolster South Africa¡¯s wildlife economy, while growing the Eastern Cape region¡¯s black rhino population.
The Global Wildlife Program (GWP) 2023 Progress Report provides an overview of data and project impacts across all technical themes, updating the status of implementation progress across the 38-country GWP portfolio. It highlights trends in knowledge exchange and learning from the global coordination project , illustrates how projects are learning from one another, and how GWP is working to close gender gaps.
